On December 18, a scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Honored Scientist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Gahraman Mehdigulu oglu Gahramanov was held at the Azerbaijan Medical University. First, our National Anthem was played, and the memory of our heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the integrity and future of our Motherland was commemorated with a minute of silence.
After that, opening the conference with an introductory speech, the rector of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Professor Garay Garaybeyli said that there is an important tradition formed by the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev in our country. According to this tradition, the memory of personalities who have made invaluable contributions to the development of our people, science, education and healthcare is always commemorated with respect, and their anniversaries are celebrated at a high level. The rector emphasized that under the leadership of the esteemed President Ilham Aliyev, this tradition is also consistently preserved and kept alive at the Azerbaijan Medical University.

In his speech, Professor Garay Garaybeyli reviewed the life and work of Gahraman Gahramanov, characterizing him as one of the luminaries of Azerbaijani medical science. He noted that Gahraman Gahramanov, the founder of the school of neurophysiology and neurochemistry, dedicated his entire glorious life to the development of medical science, the discovery of scientific truths, and the education of the younger generation: “Gahraman Gahramanov, who was born on December 26, 1925 in the village of Garadaghly, Gafan district, Zangezur district, was always an exemplary intellectual with his pure beliefs, high moral qualities, and rich intellect. The scientific and moral influence of prominent scientists such as Bahadur Eyvazov, Kamil Balakishiyev, Fuad Efendiyev, Mustafa Topchubashov, Zulfugar Mammadov, Abdulla Garayev, and Ahad Hasanov, who met him in his youth, played an important role in determining his scientific path. Gahraman Gahramanov, who once thought of becoming a surgeon, later considered it more appropriate to devote his life to the development of physiological science, and this choice was a great gain for Azerbaijani medical science.

Researches he conducted since the 1950s has aroused great interest in the scientific community. Having graduated from the Azerbaijan Medical Institute with a “red diploma”, Gahraman Gahramanov defended his candidate dissertation in 1958 under the guidance of Professor Abdulla Garayev. His work created an important scientific basis for subsequent research in the field of interoreceptors and metabolism.

The scientific and pedagogical activity of the scientist, who worked at the Department of Normal Physiology for many years, has always been highly appreciated. He was awarded the “Healthcare Excellence” badge, the honorary title of “Honored Scientist”, the honorary decree of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR, a number of orders and medals, including the “Glory” order, one of the highest awards of independent Azerbaijan.

Recalling that Professor Gahraman Gahramanov is the author of numerous scientific articles, monographs and textbooks, the rector drew attention to the fact that his book “Windows to the Secrets of the Brain and Heart”, published in 2001, is still used as a valuable source in the field of physiology today.

He noted that Gahraman Gahramanov was not only a scientist, but also an encyclopedic intellectual with a broad worldview: "In his lectures, he skillfully linked the latest achievements of medicine and physiology with history, philosophy, poetry and literature, and, by appealing to the ideas of such geniuses as Nizami, Nasimi, Tusi, Al-Farabi, and Ibn Sina, he instilled in his students not only knowledge, but also a philosophy of life."

Speaking at the conference, Academician Ahliman Amiraslanov, Chairman of the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis, emphasized that Gahraman Gahramanov created a great scientific school and noted that Gahraman Gahramanov worked in the field of physiology until the end of his life, carried out scientific research, and published books: "The scientists sitting here will agree with me that the pinnacle of the activity of every researcher, every great scientist is the scientific school he created. Gahraman Gahramanov also created a great scientific school in the true sense of the word, and I believe that it is important to hold anniversaries of such great scientists and specialists. Because the younger generation should know the past of our science, healthcare, and education well. Usually, when I talk about such people, I always say that the life of people who have dedicated their entire lives to their people and their Motherland is as long as the life of those people. Professor Gahraman Gahramanov is one of such personalities."

Deputy Minister of Health Nadir Zeynalov, sharing his memories as a student of Professor Gahraman, particularly noted his ability to explain the complex science of physiology in a simple and understandable language: "Professor Gahraman taught us the subject of human physiology. Human physiology is a very complex science. In fact, physiology is the life of a person. Our physical and mental health is physiology. Despite the modern achievements of this science, there are still dark points and new discoveries are made every year.

Professor Gahraman made that complex science, human physiology, easy for us students,

He explained in a language we could understand and made his lectures very interesting. In his lectures, Professor Gahraman, of course, would talk about physiology, scientific issues, his own experiments, and especially about his scientific supervisor Anokin and his experience. At that time, there was no internet, and Professor Gahraman's lectures seemed like fantastic information to us. But during his lectures, he would also talk about literature, the history of Azerbaijan, recite verses from poems, and combine this with physiology. I would also like to thank the university administration for organizing such a magnificent conference in memory of the teacher Gahraman”.

Corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Normal Physiology of AMU, Professor Arif Mammadov delivered an extensive report dedicated to the life and scientific heritage of the outstanding scientist.

Professors Ibadulla Aghayev and Pasha Galbinur spoke about the invaluable contributions of Gahraman Gahramanov to Azerbaijani medical science in their memorial speeches.

Speaking on behalf of the family members of G. Gahramanov, his son, Professor Aydin Gahramanov expressed his deep gratitude to the university administration and the participants of the event for this tribute to the memory of his father.

The work of the scientific and practical conference continued with sessions.
